I setup a new iMac for a blind person yesterday. That was very interesting. I used assistive technologies available from Apple under System Preferences that speak the contents of the screen, that read text (like eMails), that take dictation and turn it into text, and that accept spoken commands (read my mail, open browser, etc.). She uses a non-Braille Microsoft keyboard she is familiar with and can accomplish a lot just with keyboard commands (Open, Quit, Print, Shut-Down, etc). I learned and discovered as we went along. Sometimes I found myself working with eyes closed trying to understand and set things up to operate as smoothly as possible. Not to sound insensitive, but the whole experience was a real eye-opener for me.
